Koi & Other Pond Fish
Pond Fish will add drama and brilliance to your backyard haven, with their wonderful personalities and intriguing patterns and colors. Pond fish can withstand a wide range of temperature and water conditions provided there is sufficient oxygenation and proper filtration. Fancy Goldfish are well suited for the smaller garden pond, but must be brought indoors during the winter months and housed in an aquarium. Comets and Shubunkin are great candidates for the average backdoor pond of at least 18" in depth and 500 gallons or more. Koi are another popular choice for the larger garden pond that is at least 3 feet deep and over 1000 gallons. Koi were developed in Japan, and were selectively bred through the centuries in order to bring out certain characteristics such as scale type and size, color form, and color pattern. Many high quality Koi are in high demand, and yield a higher price than their domestic bred counterparts. High quality Japanese Koi are recognized by specific variety names.
