Sleep in PetsAnimals sleep in different amounts, patterns, positions, and times of the day. Try to determine which of the following statement about animals and sleep are true and which are false.
  1. Dolphins take catnaps in which they shut down one hemisphere of their brain at a time.

  2. Fish close their eyelids when they sleep.

  3. Ferrets require little sleep and are easily aroused.

  4. Hamsters and hedgehogs are nocturnal.

  5. Horses sleep standing up.

  6. Birds often sleep standing on one foot.

  7. Like people, dogs have two types of sleep, slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during which they may twitch, yelp, and breathe rapidly.

  8. Reptiles also have REM sleep.

  9. Cats are asleep for 2/3 of their lives.

  10. Animals require sleep for survival.
