Corticosteroid Ophthalmic Preparations

Many types of ophthalmic preparations are used to treat eye diseases in animals, depending upon the eye condition and species of animal. Some products only contain one ingredient, while others contain several. The most common products contain one or more antibiotics and/or steroids.

Generic Names of Ingredients
Antibiotics: bacitracin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin sulfate, neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B, oxytetracycline

Corticosteroids: betamethasone, dexamethasone, flumethasone, hydrocortisone acetate, isoflupredone acetate, prednisolone acetate

Other ingredients: atropine

Ingredients in Generic Products:
Bemacol, Chlorbiotic: chloramphenicol
AK-Dex, Decadron Phosphate, Maxidex: gentamicin sulfate and dexamethasone
Econopred Plus: prednisolone acetate
Gentocin Ophthalmic Solution: gentamicin sulfate

Ingredients in Brand Name Products:
Gentocin Durafilm: gentamicin sulfate and betamethasone
Chlorasone: chloramphenicol and prednisolone acetate
Pred Forte: prednisolone and atropine
Neo-Predef: neomycin sulfate and isoflupredone acetate
Terramycin: oxytetracycline HCl and polymyxin B sulfate
Mycitracin, Neobacimyx, TriOptic-P: neomycin sulfate, bacitracin, and polymyxin B sulfate
Neobacimyx-H, TriOptic-S: neomycin sulfate, bacitracin, polymyxin B sulfate, and hydrocortisone acetate
Anaprime: neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B sulfate, and flumethasone
