Not understanding certain animal behaviors may result in an animal biting a person. Thousands of people each year are bitten by dogs, but other animals may bite us as well. Test your knowledge with this quiz about "bites" and bite behavior "bits," and try to determine whether the statements below are true or false.

  1. Aggressive game playing with dogs and cats can encourage aggressive behavior such as biting.

  2. A ferret may bite if startled, overly excited, or handled improperly.

  3. Small pets, such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters may bite if they are frightened, pregnant, injured, or not picked up properly.

  4. If a bird starts biting, an avian veterinarian should check the bird for a health problem, as the bird could be acting in response to being in pain from an injury, or illness.

  5. A responsible dog, cat, or ferret owner will make sure their pets are up to date on all vaccinations, especially rabies.

  6. Introducing your dog to many different types of people and situations early in his socialization may help your dog be less easily frightened, less protective, and less likely to bite.

  7. It is obvious to most people that sharks, piranhas, and eels may bite the hand that feeds them, but triggerfish and puffers can inflict a painful bite, too.

  8. A dog may bite if she is caring for her puppies as a 'protective reflex' action.

  9. Milk snakes are a more nervous species of snake and may tend to bite, whereas a ball python prefers to defend itself not by biting, but by rolling itself in a ball.

  10. Children and the elderly are more susceptible to developing an infection from a cat bite.

  11. Symptoms developing from a serious bite include: fever, headache, swollen glands, or decreased appetite.

  12. Any bite that punctures the skin should be cleaned immediately with a mild cleanser and reported to a healthcare provider.
