Q. How do I determine how much live sand I will need for my saltwater aquarium?

A. In general, to achieve a depth of 1 inch, you will need 1 pound of live sand per gallon. For a two-inch depth, try 1.5 pounds per gallon. The usual recommendation is to have between 1-3 inches depth in a tank without a plenum. If a plenum is included in your system, consult a detailed reference, such as Live Sand Secrets, by Bob Goeman.
