Q. Why do I need to bring in multiple stool samples when I go to the vet?

A. When we obtain samples of the feces of a dog or cat every day for three or more days they are called 'serial stool samples.' Serial stool samples are necessary to identify some intestinal parasites. One such parasite is called Giardia. Giardia is a protozoa (one-celled organism) and is a cause of diarrhea in dogs and cats. Infection with this parasite can be very difficult to diagnose because the protozoa are so small and are not passed with every stool. Tests on multiple fecal samples (one stool sample every day for three days) are often required to find the organism.
